How should template macros work and look?

On my drive today I planned out how to do templates in the OPML Editor's blogging tool.

Now the question comes up, should the macros be formatted like Blogger macros? Or TypePad, WordPress, Radio, Manila, or ... something altogether different?

The main goal is simplicity and and ease of use for less technical users. It can't work for completely non-technical users because it's a fairly technical feature.

So if you could design the macro syntax for a new blogging tool, based on all you know from previous tools, what would it look like?
